Boat Lift

The Hudson River Series continues with this watercolor of a boat lift. The lifts along the river are getting a lot of use now when boat owners are storing their boats for the winter.
The image is 21x14" on 90 lb Aquarius 2 paper.

"Piermont Reflections"

This is another painting in the Hudson River Series. It depicts part of a marina in the Hudson River at Piermont NY. with the wide expanse of the Tappan Zee (the widest part of the Hudson River north of NY harbor) and Hook Mountain in the background. The town of Nyack (home of Edward Hopper) is on the left, and if you look closely you can see long haul truck traffic on the causway of the Tappan Zee bridge.

Watercolor, 30x22" (image size) - 2008

On a pier in the Hudson River

This is another image in the Hudson River/Hook Mountain series.
The view is looking north from a pier in the Hudson River at Piermont, NY.
The image is 30x22".
Do you have an idea of what it should be named?

Boathouse on the Hudson - Finished?

I think "Boathouse on the Hudson" is finished. I'll have to look at it over the next few weeks to see if there is anything that I want to change. If it stands up to scrutiny I will submitt it to the New Jersey Watercolor Society 66th Annual Open Juried Show in October.
News: The painting was accepted into the show on Sat. Oct. 4th.

Boathouse on the Hudson in progress.

This is an, in progress, image of a new painting of a Boathouse on the Hudson River.
I completed the top half first so that I can use it as a reference for the reflections in the bottom half. Reflections are tricky. If they don't work out, I can discard the bottom half and still have a presentable painting.

Blue Dinghy - Piermont

This is another image of the Hudson River from Piermont NY. looking north toward Hook Mountain and the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Watercolor, image size 21"x14".

This is a later revision of the image above. After looking at it over a few weeks I decided to add more contrast to the hull, add more red to the foreground, darken the forested hillside, added more color to the horizon and made the high sky darker.

See my painting, "Old Post Office" at the North East Watercolor Society, 32nd Annual International Open Exhibition at The Gallery at Kent Art Association, Kent CT. from Oct. 23rd to Nov. 9th.

New Hudson River paintings - Piermont, NY

"Piermont View", watercolor, 22wx14h

"Riverside - Piermont", watercolor, 22wx14h

These two watercolors are scenes from the riverside town of Piermont, NY. The town is located just 25 miles upriver from Times Square, but a world away. At this location the Husdon River is almost three miles wide, so it is experienced more like a large lake than a river.

"Bloom" Mobile Installation

This is a photo montage of my newly completed Mobile "Bloom" for a private client.
The photo shows how it will look after it is installed in its intended location.

Grace Church interior watercolor

This is a recent commissioned work; an interior view of the altar of a local church. It is a much renovated and elarged church. It seems that with each renovation the interior became darker as the windows moved farther away from the nave, so that now the altar is lit mainly by artificial light.

Proposed Mobile design for a commissioned work.

These are two photo monatage images of a proposed Mobile for a private client. The Mobile was first designed and modeled in 3D by using Google Sketch Up. An image file was then exported and inserted into a photo of the future location of the Mobile.

The Mobile is now under construction.

Last day to see the Mobiles at the Monmouth Museum

June 30 is the last day to see the Mobiles at the Monmouth Museum

Arcticle from the Swedish language Finnish newspaper SYD-ÖSTERBOTTEN - June 5, 2008

Arkitekt och konstnär: Närpesbördige Gustav Rosenlöf ställde ut sina akvarellmålningar i New York i slutet av maj.

Närpesbördig höll utställning i New York

Rosenlof and Aunio Exhibiting at the Salmagundi Club

This is an excerp from an arcticle by Saga Blane in the May 29th issue of NORDEN newspaper on the Salmagundi Exhibit.

“Gustav Rosenlof draws immediate comparisons with Edward Hopper. His primary subject, houses, are rendered in bold, saturated colors and clean geometrical lines. There is a prevading emptiness and marked absence of humanity. Unlike Hopper, however, Rosenlof's emptiness is not one of psychological abandonment. Rather, his paintings are balanced and the emptiness peaceful, a movie-set where the actors have gone off to lunch.
His townscapes and “Shaker Series” evoke a gentle nostalgia for the American Dream, for the wholesomeness of life and communal living. His close-ups of rooftops act as snapshots of the mundane, where everyday elements are blown up and larger-than-life. His work reflects his training as an architect, and the rationality in his paintings harks back to the Scandinavian preference for clarity in pure color and simple lines.”

Gustav Rosenlof revisits 'Mobiles'

The New Jersey Emerging Artists Series continues in the Nilson Gallery at the Monmouth Museum with "Mobiles" by Gustav Rosenlof of Hillsdale.

The sixth artist in the series, Rosenlof creates mobiles of abstract shapes, evoking subjects found in nature.
The show will run through June 29 at the museum, located on the campus of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. A gallery talk with Rosenlof will take place 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the museum. This discussion is free and open to the public.
Rosenlof states about his work, "I built my first mobiles as a student at the High School of Music and Art in New York City after seeing a show of Alexander Calder's work at the Guggenheim Museum. I spent hours walking up and down the ramp in awe. The architecture of the mobiles and the art of the building merged at a seminal moment for me. I became an architect and I became an artist. After many years of concentrating on architecture and painting, I have lately begun to revisit my early fascination with mobiles."

Rosenlof 's mobiles are constructed by connecting plastic shapes with stainless steel links or ordinary fishing line.
"In my mobiles, the shapes themselves are an integral part of the structure, not just objects balancing on the end of wires," he states.
"Each shape must be visually pleasing, be strong enough to support all the shapes below it, and balance at one point, while holding its position relative to the rest of the mobile. This is the architectonic approach. A strong idea, influencing and melding, form, function and structure into an integrated whole."

The Main Gallery and Nilson Gallery at the Monmouth Museum are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
